Nel comune di Assergi, nella parte meridionale del monte Gran Sasso, a 1.730 metri d'altitudine, si trova la cappellina dedicata a S. Franco, monaco eremita vissuto nel XII secolo. La cappellina, realizzata con pietra a vista, è stata edificata sopra due cabine nelle quali sgorga la Sorgente di S. Franco; essa presenta un ingresso ad arco e un sedile sulla parete destra. Sopra l'altare si trova una lapide in marmo bianco che ricorda il restauro operato nel 1945, mentre un pannello con 24 maioliche raffigura un miracolo del Santo. Si racconta che S. Franco, percuotendo la roccia con il suo bastone, fece scaturire l'acqua alla quale si attribuiscono qualità taumaturgiche. Molti pellegrini, allora come oggi, si recavano a visitare questa sorgente bevendo e lavandosi con quest'acqua per ottenere la guarigione delle malattie della pelle. Proprio per sfuggire al pellegrinaggio di questi visitatori, il Santo si spostò ben presto recandosi nella più impervia grotta sul Cefalone. (Fonte: www.regione.abruzzo.it)
