La Wieskirche è un importante santuario la cui origine risale al 1730, anno in cui due monaci premostratensi del convento di Steingaden, Padre Magnus Straub ed il confratello Lukas Schwaiger, realizzarono, in occasione della processione del Venerdì Santo, una statua in legno raffigurante Cristo flagellato usando parti di diverse figure lignee e ricoprendone le giunture con tessuto di lino. La statua, che rappresenta Gesù pieno di sangue e ferite, destò nella popolazione locale una visione traumatizzante e così venne portata nel solaio del convento. Il 4 marzo del 1738 la moglie dell'oste del monastero, la contadina Maria Lory, portò la statua nella sua masseria affinchè tutti potessero vederla; in pochi giorni la gente del luogo si portò in processione a pregare davanti al "Cristo flagellato". 14 giugno 1738 avvenne il miracolo: Maria Lory notò alla sera e la mattina seguente alcune gocce sul volto di Cristo che lei ritenne essere delle lacrime. Questo fatto eccezionale diede avvio ad un grande movimento di pellegrini da tutta la Baviera e anche da altre zone. Venne costruita un piccola cappella per custodire la statua lignea ma col tempo lo spazio era troppo piccolo e si diede inizio alla costruzione di un grande chiesa.
