La Manica Lunga venne edificata nella prima metà del '600 ad opera degli architetti Amedeo e Carlo di Castellamonte per volere di Carlo Emanuele I. Presente nelle illustrazioni del Theatrum Sabaudiae, questo edificio lungo e stretto, al tempo collegato con il corpo centrale del Castello, era destinato ad ospitare la pinacoteca ducale. Danneggiato, come tutto il complesso, dalle truppe francesi del Generale Catinat nel 1693, esso avrebbe dovuto essere abbattuto per rispondere alle esigenze del nuovo progetto elaborato da Filippo Juvarra. L'architetto messinese aveva previsto al suo posto un corpo simmetrico a quello preesistente, con al centro il grande atrio e il salone centrale al piano nobile. Il progetto venne interrotto prima della demolizione della Manica Lunga, che da quel momento venne usata come spazio di servizio. Con la cessione del Castello alla Città di Rivoli la Residenza diventa caserma, mentre durante il secondo conflitto mondiale sarà destinata ad accogliere gli sfollati. Queste improprie destinazioni d'uso modificano la struttura, vengono edificati nuovi vani destinati ai servizi igienici, come si evince dalle fotografie che documentano lo stato di degrado e di abbandono di tutto l'edificio. Il restauro della Manica parte nel 1986, data che campeggia in testata, per concludersi definitivamente nel 2000, con l'inaugurazione della sala espositiva al terzo piano.Con questi lavori, la vocazione museale dello spazio torna ad essere valorizzata. Andrea Bruno, l'architetto protagonista dei lavori di restauro, in esterno pone le scale e l'ascensore, realizzati con materiali trasparenti per dare possibilità di osservare meglio la struttura, lunga 147 metri e larga 6. La copertura metallica, realizzata ex novo, è connotata dalla ripetitività delle centine, con una calotta centrale per tutta la lunghezza dell'edificio, aumenta notevolmente l'illuminazione grazie all'eliminazione dei solai, delle grandi vetrate e delle strutture realizzate in un secondo tempo e non appartenenti al cantiere castellamontiano.
