Maestoso emerge Castel Tirolo su una zolla morenica sopra la conca di Merano all'imboccatura della Val Venosta. Il maniero fu il castello avito dei Conti di Tirolo fu edificato e conta oggi tra i simboli della regione, dato che diede il nome all'intera regione del Tirolo sotto la signoria di Mainardo II nel XIII secolo. La realizzazione del castello risale all'XI secolo e ben presto Castel Tirolo diventò il castello più importante di tutta la regione. Il muro di cinta attorno al castello, eretto attorno il 1100, rientra tra le più antiche e ben conservate mura che oggi si possono ancora ammirare. Il castello era in possesso di diversi conti e signorie, tra i quali anche la contessa Margarethe Maultausch e l'imperatore austriaco Franz I. Nel 1919 il castello divenne proprietà della provincia, la quale ha ristrutturato l'intera struttura e nel 2003 ha aperto un museo storico-culturale. Il museo rappresenta ed espone oggetti della storia della regione del Tirolo, dall'inizio fino al giorno d'oggi. Ben conservati e molto importanti sono i portali romanici del palazzo e della cappella, ricchi di bassorilievi ed affreschi del XIII secolo. Inoltre, all'interno della cappella si trovano i più antichi dipinti su vetro del Tirolo ed una crocifissione in legno del XIV secolo. Ed inoltre: nei pressi del castello si trova il Centro di Recupero Avifauna dove si possono ammirare rapaci. Ed anche le piramidi di terra del Tirolo si trovano nelle vicinanze
