La figura geometrica dell'ottagono imposta la struttura architettonica della chiesa: guardando la cupola vediamo una struttura di archi incrociati che formano un fiore di luce a otto petali. Il numero otto è simbolico: nella tradizione cristiana molto diffuso per i battisteri, indica il giorno perfetto, il giorno della vittoria e del ritorno di Cristo, il giorno senza fine, dopo i nostri giorni ciclati sul sette, la settimana, verrà l'ottavo giorno in cui Gesù, glorioso, giungerà su di un cangiante destriero (hyppos leukos) e verrà per il “Giudizio di Dio sulla storia”.
