Col nome di Ghirlandina è tradizionalmente conosciuta la torre campanaria del Duomo di Modena. Alta 86,12 metri, ben visibile al viaggiatore che arrivi in città da qualunque punto cardinale, la torre è il vero simbolo di Modena. L'originale Torre di San Geminiano, di pianta quadrata, innalzata su cinque piani entro il 1179, fu poi rialzata nei due secoli successivi (anche per motivi di rivalità con le torri bolognesi) con l'introduzione della caratteristica punta ottagonale, secondo un disegno di Arrigo da Campione, uno dei tanti 'Maestri Campionesi' che tra Duecento e Quattrocento aggiornarono lo stile della cattedrale al nuovo gusto gotico. La punta è ornata da due ghirlande, vale a dire due ringhiere di marmo, da cui il nome. Al suo interno è custodita la Secchia Rapita, motivo della guerra fra i Modenesi ed i Bolognesi celebrata nel poema di Alessandro Tassoni. Nella piccola Piazza Torre che si affaccia su via Emilia, è collocato il Monumento ad Alessandro Tassoni, il più celebre dei poeti modenesi, autore del poema eroicomico La Secchia Rapita, in cui con suprema ironia si narrano le contese medievali tra modenesi e bolognesi. L'arguzia del personaggio è ben rappresentata nella posa della statua, realizzata nel 1860 dallo scultore modenese Alessandro Cavazza.
