Il Duomo di Modena è tra i maggiori monumenti della cultura romanica in Europa, riconosciuto nel 1997 dall'UNESCO Patrimonio Mondiale dell'Umanità, assieme alla sua torre Ghirlandina e all'adiacente Piazza Grande. Il Duomo fu fondato il 9 giugno del 1099 per iniziativa delle varie classi sociali cittadine, come affermazione dei valori civici, culturali e religiosi della nascente Comunità. Dedicato aS. Maria Assunta, custodisce le spoglie di S. Geminiano, Vescovo e patrono di Modena morto nel 397. Il sepolcro del Santo vi fu trasferito nel 1106 da una precedente cattedrale. La consacrazione avvenne nel 1184. L'architetto Lanfranco e lo scultore Wiligelmo realizzarono la cattedrale in una sintesi fra la cultura antica e la nuova arte lombarda, creando un modello fondamentale per la civiltà romanica. Dalla fine del 1100 sino al Trecento il cantiere fu proseguito dai Maestri Campionesi, scultori e architetti lombardi provenienti da Campione. Il Palazzo Comunale di Modena non si tratta in realtà di un unico palazzo, ma del risultato della ristrutturazione sei-settecentesca di numerose costruzioni sorte a partire dal 1046, tutte con la medesima funzione di edifici amministrativi e di rappresentanza. L'antica Torre Civica (oggi Torre Mozza) crollò nel 1671 in seguito a un terremoto.
