Choir Stalls, Salisbury Cathedral sent on May 12, 2016 (0:03) by Timk2. 29 comments, 2180 views. [retina]

at 10mm, 1/8 f/5.0, ISO 1600, hand held. Salisbury, United Kingdom.

I'm hoping that the bigger pixel count and better high iso capabilities of my new D7100 over the older technology D7000 that it replaces will be of particular use in situations like this, handholding in very dark interiors, with large differences between light and shadow. These very dark (they look much darker than they do in my photo) medieval carved oak choir stalls just soak up light, so hand-holding whilst trying for some depth of field (despite the ultrawide 10mm) is always a juggle. NEF (RAW) files from the D7100 cannot be read, or even opened by my Photoshop CS5 and I've no money left to upgrade to CS6, so needs must and I spent a whole afternoon downloading DNG Converters and stuff, but still failure. In the end, I downloaded the latest Nikon NX2 software and convert NEFS to huge (150mb!!) TIFFs and edit those... what a lot of hassle! #Cathedrals

Thank you Fabrizio, yes, I'm already getting used to using it. Perhaps, if you thought the shot was 'great' that you could 'like' too?

Goodness! That sounds like a lot of work, Tim! But you've ended up with a very fine image! Beautiful detail and great light management!

Funnily enough, one of my Malaga images that I intend to post is of similar dark wood stalls :)

It is a quite a lot of work, Ann, and frankly annoying, (VERY, on the afternoon of delivery) plus a few other gremlins associated with buying secondhand, but it's beat them at their game or let them beat you at their game (if you follow me). But, obviously, it was a move I had to make and now I've made that move and finally got it (big financial outlay) I have to make the most of it. (again, if you follow me...)!

Thank you Clara - did you mean chamber, or camera? Cheers!

I mean the room of course :-)

Sorry to butt in on your conversation with Clara, Tim, but if you click on the 'show/hide original' button, you will see that Clara wrote 'camera' on both occasions but Google Translate changed it so that it no longer made sense!
