Il castello di Himeji è a volte conosciuto col nome di Hakuroj? o Shirasagij?, cioè airone bianco, a causa del suo aspetto esteriore di un colore bianco brillante. Il castello di Himeji è un tipico esempio di castello giapponese, nel 1346 Akamatsu Sadanori pianificò la costruzione di un castello ai piedi del monte Himeji, dove Akamatsu Norimura aveva costruito il tempio di Shomyoji. Nel 1580 Toyotomi Hideyoshi si impossessò del castello e Kuroda Yoshitaka costruì una torre di 3 piani a scopo difensivo. Il castello non è comunque mai stato attaccato in questo modo, quindi il sistema difensivo non ha potuto dare prova della sua efficacia. Il castello di Himeji è stato sottoposto ad un'opera di ristrutturazione partita nell'ottobre del 2009 e terminata nel marzo del 2015....
