Come un medievale World Trade Center queste torri gemelle sorgono nel centro di San Gimignano. Fatte erigere dalla famiglia Salvucci, da cui prendono il nome, superavano i 52 metri, contravvenendo ad uno statuto del 1255 che stabiliva che nessuna torre dovesse superare l'altezza della Torre Rognosa, al tempo sede del Podestà poi trasformata in carcere (da qui il nome in quanto chi vi veniva rinchiuso aveva indubbiamente delle "rogne"). Le torri, come molte altre,furono successivamente "scapitozzate" per essere riportate ad una altezza inferiore a quella della torre del Podestà.
