Quello che chiamiamo oggi Palazzo Reale è in realtà una grande dimora patrizia edificata, accresciuta nel tempo e decorata con splendore, oltre che dai Savoia nell'Ottocento, da due grandi dinastie genovesi: i Balbi (che lo costruirono tra il 1643 ed il 1650) e i Durazzo (che lo ampliarono tra la fine del Seicento e l'inizio del secolo successivo). Il palazzo è forse il più vasto complesso architettonico sei-settecentesco a Genova che abbia conservato intatti i suoi interni di rappresentanza, completi sia delle decorazioni fisse (affreschi e stucchi) sia di quelle mobili (dipinti, sculture, arredi e suppellettili). #hdr
