You would generally need to use f5.6 for such a shot Ann. Well done for trying, not a bad effort.

Thanks, Tim! I really had no idea what f stop I ought to be using, so I really appreciate your advice - why f5.6? This really was the first time I'd tried a night time shot such as this, with tripod and remote - taken at 17:31 with no lighting at all in the immediate vicinity, so it was a struggle to even see what I was doing!

Two stops faster to make it look a bit brighter?? Then, if that's too bright, vary the aperture accordingly. Get it right in camera whilst you're there - there's no lattitude in such shots for much messing in Photoshop.

Ok - I'd like to have another go before too long although it's unlikely to be from the same spot, as I'm not sure I'd like to be there alone after dark - mcw has gone home now! I'll follow your suggestion - thanks!

You follow your own way on these Ann, you need to find what works and what doesn't - and what translates well to viewing on the web. The night is your oyster, as they (should) say!

Oh, I will - don't worry! I love to hear your thoughts - and very useful they are, too! - but I try a lot of different settings to see how it affects the image, so that I gradually get to know for myself what is likely to work best in any given situation.
