con Sigma 1.4x TC-1401 at 300mm, 1/2000 f/8.0, ISO 2000, hand held. Serengeti National Park, Tanzania.

This lioness was part of a large pride of around 15 lions. While the rest of the pride slept under a nearby tree she stayed alert and watchful.

Thank you Orazio, Jean and Larry, very kind : )
Larry I like the shot not because I took it but because I agree she was stately, confident, in control and independent.

Brian hello! ... I hate to tell you but some of your latest photos African lack of contrast thus being a little flat ... And the first time that I make a criticism, but the sincerity comes before everything else !!
the subject and composition are still well-made !!
Best wishes,
Luca

Dear Luca,
I fully appreciate your feedback and I can totally understand where that feedback is coming from as it is obvious in some of the images.
I do not take your feedback as criticism but as a matter of fact.
I can tell you that the images that lack contrast or detail have been taken in bad light at a far distance from a large subject and maybe not so far for a small subject such as a bird.
So no direct sunlight at all, taken on a cloudy day in a dry, desolate background maybe beyond 15-20 meters.
I know and you would know, that most people post bird and wildlife images taken in the best light from a very close distance and do not admit that the image was taken at maybe 2-5 meters distance.
The photo of this lioness was taken with no direct light, on a cloudy day at 20 meters in the dry season and the photo of the leopard was taken in terrible back light early in the morning and again at around 20 meters in the dry season.
I have respect and appreciation for your latest photo's of Bald Eagles because of the wild scene and the photographic effort they represent, not because of contrast or detail which they also lack.
I personally try to look beyond the obvious because if we are only looking for technically perfect images of birds and wildlife we should just post photo's taken in a zoo.
My galleries attempt to represent a variety of scenes and subject. If I only wanted to present the most technically perfect shots this would be easier.
It is one of the reasons I respect galleries from Steff or Satish, they are prepared to sacrifice some photographic integrity for variety and a wonderful document.
I respect your feedback, hope you will continue to be honest and apologies for any google translation that does not correctly represent my reply.
Kindest Regards
Brian

I only expressed my thoughts with great humility and sincerity, I hope this is not cause for discussion between us.
A dear hug

Fantastic image, Brian and great title too.

I don't agree with the comment above the flat lighting. In some ways, the rendition is far more natural without garish shadows that burn out highlights. This is easier on the eye and as I say, a far more natural scenario - lions are not models that you can move around and pose in the sunshine or under studio conditions.

Thank you Maurizio : )
Thank you Tim, like most photographers I am already aware of the short comings of any image I have taken. I personally think that taken as a whole this image overcomes any shortcomings though of coarse, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
It is also interesting that folks who are not photographers see straight past the technical shortcomings and tend to view images in the spirit/intent they represent. They view with their hearts/emotions. : )
Brian
