Le tartarughe marine sono una specie protetta in Messico. Quest'anno, grazie a leggi più severe, il governo federale ha deciso di inviare truppe di soldati in alcuni degli stati costieri più problematici dove la gente caccia ancora questi splendidi animali e prende le uova per venderle al mercato nero. Questa foto è stata scattata a poche ore dalle spiagge affollate di Cancun in un luogo che non ho intenzione di rivelare, ma che comunque, è una delle ultime roccaforti delle tartarughe marine, dove fortunatamente è ancora vietato portare ombrelloni o sedie a sdraio. Lì mi è capitato di trovare gente delle mie parti (Città del Messico) che si era fatta tre ore di volo solo per poter fare del volontariato ed aiutare ogni notte le madri di tartaruga verde ad ultimare la deposizione delle uova. La foto è stata scattata alle 23:00 con l'ausilio di una luce rossa che sembrava non disturbare particolarmente l'animale, intento, come vedete, a scavare il nido. Mentre scattavo un addetto della riserva prendeva le misure della neo-mamma, ancora stressata per la risalita della spiaggia. Le "lacrime" che vedete probabilmente servono ad espellere la sabbia dagli occhi di questi splendidi rettili, ma a me ricordano la sofferenza di una specie che dopo viaggi infiniti torna nel proprio luogo di nascita per scoprire che è stato devastato in molti casi dalle immense strutture ricreative umane.
