La storia del castello di Linderhof - il nome deriva da un possente tiglio, Linde in tedesco, che da secoli si trova nel parco - risale al Quattrocento, periodo in cui si segnala la presenza nella vallata del Graswang, nel sud della Baviera e quasi al confine con l'Austria, di un podere di proprietà della vicina abbazia benedettina di Ettal. Re Massimiliano II lo trasformò nell'Ottocento in un padiglione di caccia e nel 1869 il figlio Ludwig II acquistò il terreno circostante con l'intenzione di costruire una "villa reale".
