Il nome "tulipano" deriva dal turco "tullband" copricapo, turbante, probabilmente per via della caratteristica forma di questo fiore. Secondo un'antica leggenda persiana, la più antica tra tutte quelle che vedono il tulipano come protagonista, questo nacque dalle gocce di sangue di un giovane ragazzo suicidatosi in seguito ad una terribile delusione amorosa.
