Giornata piena di emozioni a Rio Lagartos, riserva naturale nella parte ovest della penisola dello Yucatàn. Molte sono state le specie avvistate quel giorno, insieme alla nostra guida Diego: falchi pescatori, coccodrilli, aquile reali, fenicotteri, cormorani, sule, spatole rosa, urubù testa nera e gabbiani. Dopo un giro in barca di due ore eravamo giunti all'ora nella quale il sole stava iniziando a calare, coperto da un ammasso di nuvole. La fortuna, tuttavia, ci ha concesso una luce spettacolare nei minuti antecedenti al tramonto visto che le nuvole si sono diradate in men che non si dica. Questo fenicottero in particolare l'ho ripreso mentre passeggiava solitario nella laguna, forse infastidito dalle altre centinaia di esemplari e dall'avvicinarsi della nostra barca. La riserva di Rio Lagartos è una delle ultime roccaforti dei fenicotteri nello Yucatàn: da qui partono centinaia di individui ogni anno per andare a riprodursi in vari altri luoghi partendo dalla vicina riserva di Celestùn, fino alle Everglades della Florida. Inoltre, eventualmente, è anche luogo di approdo dei rarissimi giaguari ancora presenti nello Yucatàn, che scappano dagli incendi appiccati all'interno della giungla e dalla persecuzione dei contadini. La nostra guida ci ha spiegato che se ne sono visti solo due in trent'anni e l'ultimo incontro era avvenuto qualche settimana prima del nostro arrivo, in una calda sera di luglio.
