Thanks, Tim! I photographed the sunrise again as well today. And lost my circular polarising filter...... Thinking about buying an ND filter.....

Replace your polariser first, I use one (almost) all the time. NDs require specialist use, with tripods and such for the necessary long exposures.

Ok - thanks for the advice. I couldn't imagine managing without a polariser, especially as I shoot 'contre jour' so often but my knowledge of ND filters is very limited - mostly limited to the info given me by a young guy who was singing their praises at the beach yesterday! I do have a tripod but don't actually use it - too much faff to carry round I guess but I ought to get over that hurdle, if I want my photography to improve!
