Vicino alla Reggia di Venaria, considerata il fulcro del sistema delle residenze reali dei Savoia, si estende il Parco della Mandria con il Borgo Castello. Qui si trovano gli appartamenti privati di Vittorio Emanuele II, primo re d'Italia, e di Rosa Vercellana, sua sposa morganatica dal 1869, divenuta famosa come "la Bella Rosin". Il sovrano sceglie questa residenza come uno dei luoghi preferiti per la villeggiatura, dove dedicarsi alla propria grande passione: la caccia. L'arredamento si ispira alla moda esplosa nella seconda metà dell'Ottocento, cioè il riuso degli stile del passato: dal barocco al rococò fino al rinascimento. Negli appartamenti di Borgo Castello una squadra di eccellenti artigiani realizza salotti, camere e salottini, dove lascia la "firma" del committente: gli stemmi sabaudi sulle lampade in ceramica della Sala del Biliardo, i temi venatori disseminati su mobili soffitti e porte, i motivi di rose e di fiori rosa e rossi - omaggio a Rosa Vercellana - sulle tappezzerie.
