Sulla sponda destra del Lago grande di Avigliana, nei primi anni del 1300 esisteva un semplice Pilone di campagna, espressione della devozione degli abitanti del luogo verso la Beata Vergine, alla quale rivolgersi tra le tante difficoltà della vita: per la salute dei bambini e degli anziani, per la prosperità degli animali domestici, contro il flagello delle infezioni che tanto frequentemente distruggevano le viti e le altre colture.1 La Madonna vi era raffigurata in atteggiamento materno, seduta con in braccio, nel dolce atto di allattarlo, il Bambino che tiene tra le manine, trastullo innocente, una rondine. Di qui il titolo di Madonna della rondine. Da questo semplice Pilone ha origine il Santuario della Madonna dei laghi che domina la ridente conca del Lago grande di Avigliana. Tra le tante grazie ottenute per intercessione della Madonna della rondine, forse la più insigne, è quella ricevuta dalla contessa di Savoia, Bona di Borbone, sposa di Amedeo VI, tanto desiderosa di poter stringere anche lei al proprio seno un bambino ed erede. La Madonna accoglie il suo desiderio di mamma ed il 24 febbraio 1360 nasce Amedeo VII, il Conte Rosso. La riconoscenza verso la Madonna, di Bona di Borbone, di tante altre mamme felici e di tutte le persone beneficate, fu grande e continua: il Pilone si trasformò in piccola Cappella e quindi in Santuario con annesso il Convento per i Padri Cappuccini. I lavori per la costruzione dell'edificio possono farsi risalire al novembre 1622 quando, per volere del duca di Savoia Carlo Emanuele I, vennero incaricati della costruzione del santuario Bartolomeo e Bino Lumaga, seguendo un progetto di Nicola Ramelli, allora architetto ducale. La cupola risale al 1638, opera di Antonio Rolla. Nonostante sia diverso l'architetto, le maestranze che lavorarono alla Madonna dei Laghi sono le stesse che operarono anche al Monte dei Cappuccini di Torino, per cui non poche sono le somiglianze tra i due edifici religiosi, specie nell'architettura esterna.
