A S. Marco d'Alunzio (ME),paese di storia antichissima, (antica Haluntium citata da Cicerone nelle Verrine) nonché ricchissimo di arte, si tiene un rito penitenziale che consta di una processione che vede il Cristo Crocifisso (bellissima opera del 1608, eseguita da Scipione LI Volsi) portato a spalla da 33 penitenti, detti Babbaluti. Detti penitenti vestono un abito color scarlatto, con un cappuccio, dello stesso colore, che copre il volto obbligando questi fedeli all'anonimato. Essi partendo da una chiesetta, si avviano verso la chiesa di S. Maria d'Aracoeli; vicino alla chiesa d'Aracoeli s' inchinano toccando la strada con la testa. Entrando si dispongono sotto le aste del Crocifisso, che poco prima era stato portato a mano fino alla spiazzale della chiesa mentre un sacerdote tiene una predica sui dolori del Cristo. La processione viene aperta dalle confraternite , mentre i Babbaluti intonano una litania di penitenza in dialetto(alternando il gruppo davanti con quello dietro): SIgnuri misiricordia e piità ( in it.=signore misericordi e pietà).La processione si chiude nella chiesa dove era cominciata.Detta festa si tiene l'ultimo venerdì di marzo.
