Restando in tema di piante... e sempre sull'isola di Maui, non si può non passare ad ammirare questo enorme Baniano...!!! Si trova al centro della caratteristica cittadina di Lahaina.... Un tempo centro delle attività legate alla caccia delle balene, ai giorni nostri è il ritovo della maggior parte dei turisti che frequentano la zona nord-ovest dell'isola... Ideale per un aperitivo, cenare, e una passeggiata sulla main street per gli amanti dello shopping... Questo Baniano si avvia verso i 150 anni di vita ed è il più grande presente sul territorio degli Stati Uniti... A prima vista, si stenta a credere che si tratti di una sola pianta data l'estensione delle sue fronde, ma una volta al di sotto della volta verde ci si rende conto di quanto sia maestoso quello che ci sovrasta...!!! Questa particolare pianta usa delle radici aeree per espandere la sua larghezza e sorreggere il peso dei rami più lontani.... Nel momento in cui queste radici toccano terra, piano piano si trasformano in tronchi sempre più grossi e capaci di sorreggere le dimensioni sempre maggiori di tutta quanta la pianta...!!! Una sorta di enorme sistema di "puntelli" che si espande all'infinito per tutto il ciclo di vita della pianta stessa....!!! Allo stato attuale il diametro penso si aggiri intorno agli 80-90 metri... e inquadrarla tutta... è una vera impresa...!!!
