Sull'isola Majuli (India) ci sono circa cinquanta monasteri indù (Satras) dove si insegnano attività artistiche e culturali. I Satras sono stati creati da Sankaradeva e dal 16° secolo nei monasteri sono adottati i bambini che rimarranno celibi per tutta la vita, il bambino si integra nel nucleo familiare del monastero, composto da più monaci di diverse generazioni, quando il giovane monaco raggiungerà circa 20 anni, accoglierà,a sua volta, un bambino. Ognuna di queste famiglie monastiche occupa una casa nel cuore della Satras, simile alle famiglie tradizionali solo che è composta solo da maschi.
