Savoca è un piccolo Comune della provincia di Messina, su di un colle roccioso a 330 m sul livello del mare Ionio, tra Messina e Taormina. Tra i borghi più belli d'Italia. Prevalentemente agricolo e pastorale, si sta rivolgendo al turismo culturale. Ha conosciuto nel passato momenti di fasto, sia in epoca medioevale, ma anche durante il rinascimento ospitando famiglie nobili e l'archimandrita messinese Luca VI, infatti nel 1468 Papa Paolo istituì una diocesi archimandritale, punto di riferimento dei borghi vicini così il paese conobbe in quell'epoca uno sviluppo edilizio e demografico. Fino al 1492 era presente anche una comunità ebraica. Tra i primi anni del XV secolo e la fine del XVII secolo Savoca raggiunse il massimo splendore, divenendo insieme a Taormina centro più importante tra Messina e Catania. Dal 1854 in poi inizia una decadenza del paese, sia per la crisi della viticoltura e della bachicultura, ma anche per lo sviluppo dei paesi rivieraschi, favoriti, questi, dalla costruzione della strada litoranea e della ferrovia quindi dell'autostrada. Danneggiato anche dal terremoto del 1908, questo borgo sta negli ultimi anni conoscendo un nuovo relativo sviluppo. Nel 1962 Leonardo Sciascia trascorse, in tale paese, una settimana di villeggiatura. Entusiasta del luogo scrisse poi articoli su alcuni quotidiani lodando le bellezze del luogo. Oggi ospita varie chiese; il convento dei Cappuccini con numerose opere d'arte e nella cui cripta sono le mummie dei notabili savocesi. Inoltre i ruderi del castello medioevale di Pentefur e della antica sinagoga. Palazzi nobiliari. Dal 1970 è stata scelto come set di numerosi film e fiction di grande successo; in primis il Padrino di Francis Ford Coppola
