Al fondo del vasto territorio il re Carlo Alberto fece costruire un grande complesso agricolo in stile neogotico-romantico inglese, la Margaria , affidandone la progettazione a Pelagio Palagi. La cascina diventò centro di attività produttive e di sperimentazione di tecniche botaniche, agrarie e zootecniche, nonché azienda agraria modello: in essa si producevano miele e formaggio; nel grande fienile si conservava il prodotto dei prati; nei locali a pian terreno si depositavano i grandi vasi di citroni durante la stagione invernale; nella stalla si allevavano le mucche toscane e svizzere; ai piani superiori risiedevano le maestranze addette alle lavorazioni e manutenzioni. Nel 1849 entrò in funzione il casino del cacio adibito alla produzione di gruvière. A mitigare questo aspetto puramente utilitaristico legato all'agricoltura, Carlo Alberto fece erigere anche un reposoir per la Regina e una cappella, sempre in stile neogotico. Tra il 1844 e il 1848 Carlo Sada, allievo di Palagi, realizzò le nuove serre che in pochi anni divennero famose in tutta Europa per le centinaia di piante esotiche in esse coltivate (tra le quali ananas, felci, palme, orchidee) e per le tecniche all'avanguardia adoperate (sin dai primi anni si usò un sistema di riscaldamento a termosifone). Va inoltre osservata la bellezza dell'architettura: realizzata in stile gotico su due piani, l'illuminazione era garantita dalle ampie finestre ogivali della facciata.
