Colonnata, antichissimo borgo arroccato a 532 metri s.l.m., che la tradizione vuole essere stata fondata dai Romani per alloggiare gli schiavi impegnati nell'escavazione. Le cave del canale di Colonnata costituiscono il più imponente dei bacini apuani e offrono una superba vista dei "ravaneti", gli spettacolari accumuli di detriti di marmo bianco adagiati sui fianchi dei monti Serrone Maggiore e Spallone, alla sommità del quale si trova il bacino di Gioia: un complesso di cave che offre un colpo d'occhio unico al mondo.
