Il borgo di Ameglia ed il suo territorio hanno una storia antichissima, che risale al IV secolo a.C. e ne evidenzia l'importanza mantenuta nei secoli. Fu centro importante e porto all'epoca romana, di cui rimangono tracce nei resti di una Villa Marittima Romana presso l'odierna frazione marinara di Bocca di Magra.
