Caratteristici dell'Armeria Reale di Torino sono i cavalli in legno scolpiti dagli scultori Artero e Tamone nel corso del secolo XIX rivestiti di pelle equina, eccezionali per la loro resa naturalistica.L'animale è posto in posizione impennata. L'eleganza con cui è resa la muscolatura del cavallo, l'attenzione alle proporzioni tra i vari arti e di questi in relazione all'insieme del corpo, nonché la cura nello studio della posa, permettono di ritenerlo il migliore esemplare tra quelli, per altro di qualità elevata, prodotti dall'Armeria. Il manichino fu ideato già immaginando che dovesse portare in groppa il principe Eugenio di Savoia Soissons (1663-1736), comandante dell'esercito asburgico, scegliendo di raffigurare un cavallo Lipitzaner, ovvero della razza scelta dall'alta scuola di equitazione spagnola a Vienna, come conferma anche il colore grigio del manto.
