Sempre sulla cima del cratere dell'Haleakala non si pùò fare a meno di non notare il complesso di telescopi presente sul lato destro della sommità.... L'area non è visitabile perchè, anche se affidata alla gestione dell'unuversità delle Hawaii, all'interno del complesso sono presenti molte strutture militari... Sia aviazione che esercito, sulla cima hanno apparati di controllo legati al sistema di difesa degli Stati Uniti... motivo per cui i civili non sono ammessi all'interno dell'area... Quello che si nota in costruzione sul lato sx, dovrebbe essere quello che sarà il più grande e preciso telescopio per l'osservazione solare... Per quello che ho letto' dovrebbe permettere l'ossevazione fino ad un area della grandezza di circa 20 km della superficie solare... Ci sono voluti alcuni anni per la scelta del sito migliore per la sua costruzione, e alla fine si è scelto di posizionarlo quassù... nel mezzo dell'oceano, valutando tutte le caratteristiche del luogo... L'nsieme delle strutture non è influenzato da fattori "esterni" notturni... Ciò permette a moltissime auto, di salire durante la notte, per ossevare il sorgere dell'alba nei pressi della Casa del Sole, senza recare problemi alla visione delle strutture.... Al contrario dell'osservatorio sull'isola di Big Island, dove è obligatorio scendere mezz'ora dopo il tramonto....!!!
