La visita non prende moltissimo tempo, ed arrivando non troppo tardi in mattinata, i primi 300 visitatori accedono gratuitamente al sito teatro dell'affondamento della flotta Americana ad opera dei Giapponesi.... Confesso di essermi apprestato alla visita, in maniera abbastanza spensierata, ma il buonumore non è durato molto... Giusto il tempo di entrare nella sala di proiezione.... Il santuario della Arizona si trova sul lato opposto all'entrata del Visitor Center e vi si accede trasportati da un battello.... Prima di potervi accedere, obligatoriamente si assiste ad una proiezione di circa mezz'ora, con filmati d'epoca, in cui vengono narrati i tristi momenti del bombardamento e di tutto il momento storico.... Trattandosi di immagini autentiche del "durante" e "dopo" incursione, al momento dell'uscita, trovandosi fisicamente dove ciò avvenne... non è come vedere un documentario sul divano di casa... Da li in poi tutto avviene in maniera molto silenziosa, come è giusto che sia... in fondo il relitto che ci si appresta a visitare, non è altro che la tomba ancora oggi, di tutti i marinai che ne restarono imprigionati senza possibilità di fuga.... Una volta all'interno ci si affaccia sui due lati, dai cuali si sovrasta il relitto sottostante e le parti che affiorano dall'aqcua ormai corrose dal tempo... Quello che non ci si aspetta, e che per un certo verso, ti riporta indietro nel tempo in una specie di continuità spazio-temporale con ciò che hai da poco visto proiettato... è il forte odore di nafta che si sente nell'aria... Al momento non si realizza immediatamente da dova provenga, ma poco a poco tutto prende forma... Ancora oggi il relitto, continua a disperdere lentamente in mare, quella che era la sua scorta di carburante.... Ecco, in quel momento... sembra di sentire gli "Zero" Giappoesi volare nel cielo, e sganciare i loro carichi di morte.....

Excellent presentation of this somber memorial. Your perspective from the dock illustrates how significant the event was, by the scale of the memorial in the foreground, and the inclusion of the people along the open air deck. IMO, a very tasteful image of this hallowed area.
