Ma il padre della fanciulla proibì il matrimonio e Aratsch se ne andò all'estero, arruolandosi nell'esercito. Divenuto un fiero ufficiale, fece ritorno a casa per chiedere di nuovo la mano di Annetta, ma scoprì che la ragazza era ormai morta di crepacuore. Disperato, si diresse verso il ghiacciaio e non fece più ritorno. Da quel momento, nella sua malga sull'alpe, il vecchio zio Gian cominciò a sentire di notte il fantasma di Annetta mormorare continuamente: "Mort Aratsch, Mort Aratsch!" Così, quando tempo dopo lasciò la malga ad un giovane pastore, gli consigliò di non disturbare mai quel fantasma che sembrava far produrre alle mucche più latte. Il giovane, però, ignorò il suggerimento, rimproverò lo spirito dei morti dell'Alpe e maledisse la povera anima in pena. Il fantasma, allora, fuggì maledicendo a sua volta quei luoghi.
