La Fortezza di Kufstein è tra le costruzioni medievali più importanti del Tirolo. Posizionata sulla collina della città di Kufstein la fortezza si trova in un punto strategico dove la valle dell' Inn fa un restringimento che permetteva di controllare l'accesso alle Alpi. Oggi la fortezza è una delle mete escursionistiche più apprezzate dell'arco alpino ed attrae turisti da tutto il pianeta grazie anche al suo "Organo degli Eroi" (Heldenorgel), l'organo a cielo aperto più grande del mondo. Al suo interno è ospitato il museo cittadino e viene utilizzata per concerti e meeting. Si hanno documenti storici della fortezza già dal 1205 quando il possesso passò ai vescovi di Ratisbona. Dal 1313 divenne un feudo dei duchi della Baviera. Nel 1504 l'Imperatore Massimiliano I assediò la fortezza e conquistò la città di Kufstein facendo ricostruire la fortezza che venne in quell'occasione ampliata. Un ulteriore ampliamento della struttura venne apportato nel corso del XVII secolo. Nel 1703 e nel 1805 i bavaresi assediarono la fortezza che ritornò in mano austriaca a partire dal 1814. Durante la prima guerra mondiale parte della Fortezza di Kufstein fu usata come prigione per i prigionieri di guerra. Dal 1924 la fortezza è di proprietà della città di Kufstein.
