Madagascar, Luglio 2014. Quasi per caso scopro che, in un'area minacciata da disboscamento ma ancora relativamente vasta, resiste un gruppo di cacciatori-raccoglitori, forse l'ultimo dell'isola. Raggiungere i limiti del loro territorio è stato relativamente semplice. Avvicinarli, interagire tutt'altro. Si tratta di un'etnia che ha pochi contatti con le altre che popolano l'area (Vezo, Sakalava, Bara, etc..), per lo più limitati a scambi commerciali. Non riporto di proposito il nome del gruppo in questione né la zona in cui vivono. I primi che incontriamo scappano. Sì, scappano come avessero visto dei demoni. Non sono solo. Mi accompagna una guida Vezo che conosce la zona e alcuni dei cacciatori ma che non parla una parola né di francese né, tanto meno, di inglese. E una guida di origine Merina, che parla francese e traduce per me. Sia io sia la guida Merina siamo "stranieri", sullo stesso piano, e i cacciatori-raccoglitori fuggono alla nostra vista. I primi villaggi li troviamo vuoti. Il cibo nei piatti. Il fuoco appena spento. Io suggerisco di andar via, non mi sembra giusto spaventarli. Se non ci vogliono qui che diritto abbiamo di importunarli? Poi però scorgiamo un uomo seduto a terra accanto ad una capanna di paglia. Ha uno sguardo che non riesco a decifrare. Lotta con la sua paura di noi. Ma resta seduto. Gli porgiamo del tabacco per mostrare le nostre buone intenzioni. Fa segno di sederci. Non proferisce una sola parola e mi osserva come non mi era mai successo nella mia vita. La guida Vezo mi dice qualcosa. La guida Merina traduce. "Vuole dimostrare il suo coraggio: nessuno qui ha mai visto un bianco". Dopo qualche minuto si avvicina una bambina è la figlia.
