Il Porciglione è un piccolo uccello di palude molto riservato e difficile da avvistare, nonostante i suoi colori accesi (è tra i più colorati della sua famiglia). Presenta infatti una parte superiore marrone e una parte inferiore bluastra, con barre nere sui fianchi. Il tutto accompagnato da un becco rosso, assottigliato e leggermente curvo. Ha dimensioni medio-piccole – circa 26-29 cm – e pesa circa 90-120 gr. La sottospecie nominale vive in Europa, nord Africa e Asia occidentale; la sottospecie Rallus aquaticus hibernans si trova invece in Islanda; altre sottospecie risiedono in Asia. Il Porciglione è nidificante, parzialmente sedentario, migratore e svernante. In Europa settentrionale la specie è tendenzialmente migratrice e risiede stabilmente nell'Europa meridionale e occidentale, con numeri in aumento per quanto riguarda la popolazione svernante. In inverno i porciglioni si possono osservare anche in luoghi con temperature vicine allo zero, ai margini dei canneti. Vive solitamente nei pressi di canneti e paludi, mentre nidifica in zone asciutte deponendo solitamente una decina di uova. I porciglioni si nutrono di insetti e animali acquatici, che recuperano in aree fangose o raccogliendo il cibo nell'acqua bassa.
