A Bagheria i Ducato rappresentano più di una scuola artigiana. Qui la tradizione si è formata ed è stata sperimentata per generazioni raggiungendo forme di arte popolare di livello elevatissimo. Michele Ducato è erede e allo stesso tempo custode di quell'arte di famiglia che ha imparato a decifrare e ricomporre sin da bambino.
Va da sè che ricoprire con del colore la superificie del legno dei carri fosse necessario a proteggere il materiale dagli agenti atmosferici.
Ma quello che accade in Sicilia nell'800 è qualcosa di ben più complesso che affonda le origini nei cambiamenti socio economici che investono l'isola e che portano all'elevazione della classe sociale dei carrettieri.
Nuove risorse economiche hanno probabilmente spinto tale classe sociale a ricercare elementi culturali distintivi e che ne affermassero il nuovo stato sociale acquisito attraverso il carro che diviene vero status symbol.
Da queste richieste della commtittenza probabilmente nasce l'esigenza da parte degli artigiani di fondere motivi legati a storiche committenze nobiliari con altre popolari. Elementi già presenti nelle vecchie portantine vengono riadattati, i ferri vengono ritorti dai fabbri a disegnare il "rabiscu" dal gusto barocco, i legni vengono scolpiti persino nei raggi delle ruote.
Accanto a questi compaiono i santi che è bene sempre portarsi appresso, i cavalieri le cui storie venivano raccontate in giro da cuntisti e pupari e fatti storici o di cronaca particolarmente popolari.
La fusione di questi elementi dà vita ad un microcosmo kitsch dal quale emerge un nuovo e ricco linguaggio artistico che con il tempo di stratifica e trova le sue regole compositive con tutte le varianti che le province propongono.
