E' uno dei caposaldi dell'architettura tardoantica. Fra i primi esempi conservati (insieme al Battistero Lateranense) di edificio cristiano a pianta centrale con ambulacro. Derivato da modelli romani di templi e mausolei, ninfei, (il Pantheon, il Mausoleo di Augusto, il cosiddetto tempio di Minerva Medica) deve la caratteristica più innovativa - i due spazi circolari concentrici - a un edificio di poco precedente destinato ad influenzare l'architettura medioevale: il Martyrium del Santo Sepolcro eretto a Gerusalemme da Costantino e dalla madre Elena. Pur essendo in parte privato del suo primitivo splendore, conserva tuttora un'imponenza ed un fascino straordinari, che peraltro ne fanno uno dei luoghi preferiti dalle coppie per i matrimoni religiosi. Fu eretto agli inizi del IV secolo da Costantina (o Costanza), figlia di Costantino, a ridosso della grande basilica cimiteriale da lei fatta realizzare presso il cimitero sotterraneo ove era sepolta la martire Agnese, di cui Costantina stessa era una devota, anche a causa di una guarigione attribuita alla Santa. Qui occorre una lente grandangolare assai spinta più del Voigtlander 15 mm utilizzato e che è risultato un po' 'stretto'!
