But could you explain what the various components are, for the benefit of the ignorant in astrophotography (like me for example!).

Hai ragione Alvar !

Thanks for the info.
You write "monochrome camera": why monochrome?
I have seen images of colorful nebulae ...

Hi Alvar, the astronomical cameras are monochrome and OSC (one shoot colour).
With mono ones, like mine, every time you take a photo you put a filter in front of the sensor for what you have to do.
One for red, green, blue, then one for oxygen, hydrogen and sulfur emissions and finally one to capture everything, but always in mono, i.e. luminance.
And in the end you end up with 3 files (in the case of RGB) that you go to recombine.
The times are longer than in an OSC but the "power" is higher because you don't have the bayer matrix and therefore each pixel you exploit it 100% while in an OSC you exploit only 75% of it since for the bayer matrix each pixel is RGGB and therefore a double "Green" that in fact you never use.
It's a bit complex and difficult as a concept to explain it in 2 lines of chat but I hope I succeeded.

You succeeded, it makes sense.
As you can see, I know nothing about astrophotography.
