La caratteristica della grande Necropoli Etrusca di Monterozzi sono le tombe scavate nella pietra, ma al di sotto del livello del terreno, quindi all'esterno si presentano in genere solo con piccoli tumuli.
Nella necropoli di Tarquinia bisogna scendere in ciascuna tomba e benchè i “dromos” siano coperti da nuove scale in legno e in ferro, fornite anche di corrimano, la visita è piuttosto faticosa. Tuttavia lo spettacolo offerto dai muri affrescati delle tombe, visibili attraverso le porte a vetro poste davanti ad esse, ricompensa ampiamente della fatica provata.
Ecco come si presentano ai visitatori per la loro preservazione, infatti l'accesso avviene attraverso una scalinata dove all'ingresso della tomba troviamo una porta blindata di vetro che non permette lo scambio di calore, così da salvaguardare gli affreschi con temperature controllate. Sono splendidamente decorate e il loro apparato pittorico raggiunge un livello artistico di grande pregio ed inarrivabile capacità espressiva. La necropoli occupa una intera collina posta di fronte ad un'altra collina su cui sorgeva la città etrusca. |
