Svalbard, 27 agosto 2023. Questo cucciolo di 2 anni, il secondo orso che abbiamo avvistato durante la nostra spedizione, era intento a masticare una pietra. Il suo volto, coperto di fango, sembra esprimere la sua genuina curiosità quando ci avviciniamo a lei, e questo l'ha fatta diventare probabilmente il mio orso preferito tra i 13 che abbiamo incontrato durante il viaggio. Tuttavia, la vita di un orso polare è dura. Rispetto agli altri orsi che abbiamo incontrato, lei era piuttosto sottopeso; la malnutrizione è la prima causa di morte tra i giovani adulti, e dovrà trovare del cibo adeguato prima dell'inverno per avere una possibilità di sopravvivere. Durante l'estate, gli orsi polari non si mimetizzano al meglio, e sono facili da individuare. Per questo motivo, si nutrono principalmente di carcasse, uova e altri piccoli oggetti. Inoltre, durante i 10 giorni di navigazione, abbiamo avvistato solo due foche (il pasto preferito degli orsi). Da un punto di vista tecnico, scattare foto dal gommone Zodiac non è mai facile, ma permette di essere allo stesso livello (o, come in questo caso, anche più in basso) del soggetto.
