La basilica di San Vitale è una basilica di epoca Imperiale risalente al IV secolo dedicata originariamente ai santi Gervasio e Protasio, due giovani soldati martiri di origini milanesi, figli di san Vitale, soldato consolare e marito di santa Valeria. Durante l'impero di Onorio, il primo dell'impero romano d'Occidente, sotto il pontificato di papa Siricio per onorare il ritrovamento miracoloso ad opera di sant'Ambrogio dei santi Gervasio e Protasio del 386 la pia matrona Vestina lascia tutti i suoi averi all'oratorio a loro dedicato, che verrà ristrutturato in basilica a tre navate senza pareti e consacrato da papa Innocenzo I nel 402, per evangelizzare il popolo romano della Suburra. Le caratteristiche architettoniche della basilica imperiale di San Vitale è data da un gran numero di colonne (ancora visibili esternamente) che sorreggevano un tetto a capriate e una pianta con una navata centrale, fiancheggiata su ogni lato da un corridoio stretto, sempre porticato. La sostituzione di diversi muri con le colonne fece di questo ambienti una sorta di open spaces, anticamente aperto all'esterno, come un padiglione riccamente coperto e adorno ma senza pareti.
