A Pavia, il Ponte Coperto attuale si trova pochi metri più a valle rispetto all'originario ponte romano-medievale che era in asse con le due direttrici principali nord-sud della città. Nei periodi di magra del Ticino è facile notare i resti databili all'epoca di Ottaviano o Tiberio. Tra il 1351 e il 1355 avvenne una consistente opera di riassetto del ponte che lo portò ad avere dieci arcate, un tetto sostenuto da pilastrini e due torri alle estremità. L'affresco di Bernardino Lanzani (1522), presente nella Chiesa di San Teodoro, mostra come esso facesse parte del sistema difensivo cittadino. Nel corso dei secoli i tre restauri più rilevanti che portarono alla forma definitiva del ponte furono la sostituzione del ponte levatoio con una porta monumentale per il passaggio di Margherita d'Austria (1599), la costruzione della cappella di S. Giovanni Nepomuceno (1745) e la realizzazione di una seconda porta monumentale dell'architetto Amati (1822). L'attuale struttura del 1951 è una buona ricostruzione dell'originale, danneggiato gravemente dai bombardamenti del settembre del 1944. Da notare: San Giovanni Nepomuceno, la cui ora cappella è quella che si vede in foto sull'arcata centrale, è il patrono dei ponti, dei confessori, dei fiumi, dei viaggiatori sull'acqua e di tutte le persone in pericolo di annegamento. Quando il fiume faceva qualche vittima, la “campana degli annegati”, posta sopra la cappella, chiamava a raccolta il popolo a pregare. Se le ricerche dei primi giorni risultavano infruttuose, si deponeva sull'acqua un piatto di legno con sopra alcuni ceri accesi che la folla seguiva sulle opposte rive o sul fiume stesso con le barche: infatti, si diceva che San Giovanni Nepomuceno sospingesse i lumini e li facesse fermare nel punto in cui la vittima era stata occultata dalle acque.
