Il Moscow Mule è un cocktail tra i più conosciuti del momento ed è divenuto di moda per una semplice casualità, grazie alla riscoperta dello zenzero. Il Moscow Mule è un long drink non troppo alcolico ma è molto dissetante e, d'estate, è un toccasana piacevole e gustoso. La Russia non c'entra niente con la storia del Moscow Mule se non per l'utilizzo della vodka: il cocktail è nato nel 1941 a New York, in un bar gestito da due imprenditori alle prese con i debiti. Un giorno, tra i clienti, capita John G. Martin, distributore della vodka Smirnoff che non riesce ad essere apprezzata negli Stati Uniti. Le coincidenze, però, non capitano da sole perché, dall'altra parte del tavolino, c'è Jack Morgan, il proprietario del locale più frequentato di Hollywood, che sta provando a lanciare il suo Ginger Beer, un drink a base di zenzero. I due hanno un'idea geniale che dà origine al Moscow: combinare i due ingredienti aggiungendo un po' di lime per creare un long drink unico. La leggenda, però, continua con un aneddoto molto affascinante: pare che il nome "Moscow Mule" derivi da un'imprenditrice, seduta a quel tavolino, che doveva smaltire uno stock di tazze mug in rame con su stampato un asinello ed è, probabilmente, la prima tazza in cui fu bevuto questo cocktail. Le ragioni della tazza di rame potrebbero essere molto diverse: il rame si raffredda velocemente perché è un ottimo conduttore e, in secondo luogo, l'interazione con il lime conferirebbe quel gusto particolare e unico che ha il Moscow Mule. Per preparare un Moscow Mule secondo la ricetta originale, riempite di ghiaccio la tazza di rame (Mug), aggiungete vodka e succo di lime, completate riempiendo il Mug con la ginger beer e decorate con una fettina di lime. Alternative al Moscow Mule sono il London Mule (gin al posto della vodka), Mexican Mule (tequila al posto della vodka), Kentucky Mule (bourbon whisky al posto della vodka), Cuban Mule o Havana Mule (rum al posto della vodka). Un tocco ulteriore è aggiungere ai Mules dei pezzettini di zenzero e un paio di gocce di Angostura.
