Allora, cominciamo col dire che è vero che le due specie hanno diverse esigenze dal punto di vista ecologico, però è la berus che sta più in alto (tipicamente nelle praterie alpine, pascoli, torbiere...), mentre la Vipera aspis di norma si trova a quote più basse. In Lombardia (e in gran parte dell'Italia) è presente la sottospecie Vipera aspis francisciredi, che non è quella ritratta nella foto (questa è Vipera aspis atra o aspis aspis, presente sull'arco alpino occidentale). Da noi la berus non è presente e Vipera aspis si spinge a quote molto elevate (anche oltre i 2000 m).
Le differenze tra i due sessi sono varie, la più evidente è la forma della coda, che nei maschi è più lunga e maggiormente rigonfia alla base, dove accoglie i due "emipeni" (sì, i serpenti hanno due peni). Se si ha la possibilità di manipolare l'animale (cosa che NON si deve fare se non per motivi di studio) è abbastanza semplice riconoscere il sesso osservando ventralmente la coda. I maschi inoltre hanno una ornamentazione più marcata, con maggior contrasto. Nella berus i maschi tendono ad avere colorazione di fondo grigia, le femmine bruna. Sia in aspis (soprattutto atra) che in berus sono presenti individui melanotici o melanici con colorazione molto scura (a volte sono completamente neri).
Come si "calma" una vipera. Cominciamo col dire che le berus sono molto più nervose, non si "calmano" facilmente e continuano a soffiare e a tentare di mordere dopo la cattura. Io ho esperienza soprattutto con aspis atra: queste vipere sono più tranquille. La femmina ritratta nella foto non ha soffiato né tentato di mordere quando l'ho presa. Dopo qualche minuto l'ho sistemata nella posizione che vedi e ho fatto qualche foto, poi l'ho rimessa nel punto esatto in cui l'avevo trovata. In altri casi le vipere reagiscono violentemente alla cattura (soffiano, si muovono a scatti, mordono), poi si placano e "posano" come perfette modelle.
Ho fotografato anche grosse vipere africane, serpenti a sonagli e altri crotalidi e direi che il comportamento è sempre quello, seppure con notevoli differenze tra un individuo e l'altro (alcune vipere sono molto tranquille, altre più nervose).
Finisco con due suggerimenti:
NON bisogna provare a manipolare/fotografare una vipera se non si sa come farlo.
NON bisogna uccidere le vipere: sono animali che non aggrediscono l'uomo - è possibile osservare le vipere in tutta sicurezza...prima che fuggano alla nostra presenza!
