«Chi si appoggia al parapetto di quello spiazzo, vede un precipizio ampio e profondo, le cui impervie pareti, tappezzate di fogliame intricato, scendono a picco. Nessuna sporgenza in quella muraglia. Non un gradino per salire o per discendere. Non una cengia per sostare. Nessun punto d'appoggio. Soltanto scanalature, qua e là, lisce, logorate, poco profonde che fendono le rocce. In una parola, un abisso che attira, che affascina e che non restituirebbe nulla di quanto vi si facesse piombare.(...) Quell'abisso è detto nel paese Foiba, e serve da serbatoio al soverchio delle acque del torrente. Questo torrente non ha altro sfogo se non una caverna, che si è formata a poco a poco fra le rocce, e nella quale esso precipita con furia indescrivibile. Dove va il corso d'acqua che passa sotto la città? Chi può dirlo? Ove ricompare? Anche questo è un mistero. Di quella caverna, o piuttosto di quel canale che solca lo schisto e l'argilla, non si conosce né la lunghezza, né l'altezza, né la direzione. Forse le acque urtano in tumulto contro innumerevoli spigoli contro la foresta di piloni, che sostengono la fortezza e la città intera. Arditi esploratori, quando il livello delle acque, né troppo alto né troppo basso, consentì loro d'avventuratisi con una leggera imbarcazione, tentarono di discendere il torrente attraversando quella tetra apertura, ma le vòlte ad un certo punto si abbassano e costituiscono un ostacolo insuperabile. Ecco perché non si sa nulla di quel corso d'acqua sotterraneo. Forse s'inabissa in qualche «perdita» sotto il livello dell'Adriatico.»
