Anch'io ho osservato questo comportamento che è la cosiddetta associazione. I tassi del miele catturano oltre l'80% delle loro prede (soprattutto piccoli mammiferi e piccoli rettili) scavando il terreno. Durante lo scavo lucertole e piccoli roditori fuoriescono dai loro rifugi sotterranei e scappano in superficie divenendo per così dire “disponibili” per le specie associate al ratele. L'associazione è perciò una forma di commensalismo in cui altri predatori opportunisti sfruttano le occasioni offerte dalla caccia dei tassi di miele. Questo comportamento non comporta nè vantaggi nè svantaggi per il tasso.
In Africa sono stati osservati sia mammiferi che uccelli seguire i tassi di miele. L'associazione più comune e più regolarmente documentata è quella con l'astore cantante orientale (Melierax poliopterus o canorus). Fin dai primi anni 1970 varie osservazioni di astori cantanti che seguono i tassi del miele sono state fatte in Kenya, Botswana, Namibia e Sud Africa. Durante una ricerca durata 42 mesi recentemente completata nel Kalahari questa affascinante associazione è stata registrata regolarmente. Sono stati osservati fino a sei astori al seguito di un singolo tasso. L'associazione è più frequente durante i secchi mesi invernali, quando i tassi trascorrono gran parte della giornata in cerca di cibo.
Altre specie associate al tasso del miele sono la mangusta rossastra (Galerella sanguinea) e anche alcuni serpenti. Fra gli uccelli sono stati osservati l'astore cantante (Melierax metabates), il bucero di terra (Bucorvus leadbeateri) e il gufo africano (Bubo africanus). |
