Crocothemis erythraea (Brullé 1832) Dimensioni: 35-45 mm, apertura alare 50-70 mm Descrizione della specie: Ordine: Odonata Subordine: Anisoptera Famiglia:Libellulidae Genere: Crocothemis i maschi di questa specie sono completamente rossi con testa, occhi e addome rosso brillante e torace, al limite, bruno-rossastro. Gli esemplari immaturi e le femmine sono bruno-giallastri. Esistono anche casi, molto rari, in cui la femmina assume un colore simile a quello del maschio mantenendo comunque delle porzioni del corpo giallastre. Questo fenomeno è chiamato "omeocromia secondaria". Morfologia: Le libellule rappresentano un gruppo morfologicamente piuttosto omogeneo, anche se i vari sottordini presentano caratteri nettamente distinguibili. Adulti: Il corpo degli adulti è diviso, come negli altri insetti, in testa, torace e addome. Testa: La struttura più vistosa della testa sono gli occhi composti, formati da migliaia di ommatidi. E' più larga del torace, assai mobile e molto grande, diversa come forma nei due sottordini: globosa negli Anisotteri e trasversa negli Zigotteri. Sulla testa si trovano anche le antenne, molto ridotte, tre ocelli, disposti a triangolo e le parti boccali, composte. Torace: Il torace delle libellule, estremamente specializzato, è formato da due parti: il protorace e lo pterotorace. Il primo è molto ridotto e ad esso sono articolate la testa e il 1° paio di zampe. Il secondo è molto sviluppato, porta le ali e le zampe medie e posteriori. Il torace delle libellule presenta una particolarità detta obliquità, ossia, l'inserzione delle zampe viene ad essere spostata cefalicamente e quella delle ali caudalmente. Questa particolare disposizione, spostando il baricentro della libellula in volo verso l'avanti, permette di sopportare urti contro le prede, durante la loro cattura in aria, senza sbilanciarsi eccessivamente e senza modificare in modo marcato la traiettoria. Zampe: Sono ben sviluppate, rivolte in avanti e composte da più segmenti: femore, tibia, tarso e unghie. Sono simili nella costituzione in tutte le specie, ma variano nella lunghezza, nella forma e nel colore. Non servono per la locomozione ma per aggrapparsi ai supporti e per catturare e trattenere le prede in volo. Ali: Sono grandi, composte da una membrana chitinosa, generalmente trasparenti, ma talvolta colorate o macchiate. In posizione di riposo si presentano aperte più o meno orizzontali e perpendicolari all'asse del corpo (Anisotteri) oppure si dispongono verticalmente e obliquamente all'indietro sopra l'addome (Zigotteri). Sulle ali è presente una ricca venulazione longitudinale e trasversale che racchiude piccole concamerazioni dette celle. Tali venature, che costituiscono un importante criterio di classificazione, variano a seconda delle famiglie, dei generi e delle specie. Addome: E' mobile, sottile e di solito molto lungo. E' formato da 11 segmenti detti "uriti", dei quali i primi 10 sono ben distinguibili, mentre dell'undicesimo sono presenti solo le vestigia. Termina con delle strutture dette cerci, somiglianti ad una sorta di tenaglia, con la quale il maschio trattiene la femmina durante l'accoppiamento. Lo sbocco genitale nel maschio si trova nel 9° segmento ma, fatto unico nel regno animale, l'apparato copulatore è situato nel 2° e 3° urite. Nella femmina l'addome è generalmente più corto e dilatato e gli organi genitali sono nell'8° e 9° segmento. Le femmine delle specie più primitive sono dotate di un ovidepositore molto grosso che permette l'inserzione delle uova nei vegetali vivi o morti e che può essere scambiato per un pungiglione. Distribuzione e habitat: presente in tutta Italia e isole, predilige gli ambienti di pianura con acque ferme. Molto frequente in ambienti risicoli.
