In Sri Lanka la parte più dura della filiera del Thè, coltivazione raccolta e stoccaggio, è affidata quasi esclusivamente a lavoratori di etnia Tamil.Il motivo è di origine puramente "coloniale". La scelta degli Inglesi di coltivare il Thè sull'isola ha gettato le basi per le successive guerre civili.I Singalesi non avevano le conoscenze necessarie per portate a buon fine un ciclo coltivativo così difficile, i Britannici così importarono letteralmente gli esperti lavoratori del Thè dalla vicina colonia dell'India e più precisamente dalla regione del Tamil Nadu, lo stato indiano più vicino. Ai Singalesi venne affidata la coltivazione del caffè ma una malattia incurabile portata da un parassita locale uccise tutte le piantagioni.
