Fryderyk Chopin died on October 17, 1849 in Paris. One of the people who kept vigil at the composer's bedside until the end was his sister, Ludwika J?drzejewicz. To fulfill her brother's last wish, she brought his heart from France to Poland illegally, in a jar with alcohol. They did not want to receive the heart in the Church of the Holy Cross because they did not like the composer's relationship with the scandalous French writer George Sand, so it lay in the church garbage for thirty years. It survived the January Uprising and World War II. In 1880, the heart was moved to a niche in one of the pillars of the church of St. Cross in Warsaw. There is a plaque with the inscription Fryderyk Chopin - compatriots and a quote from the Gospel of St. Matthew. Where your treasure is, there is your heart.
