SPQR: storia ed etimologia: il suo utilizzo di questo acronimo dalla Storia antica al medioevo e i monumenti in cui appare lo stemma Roma SPQR. La sigla, emblema della Capitale, ha origini molto antiche che affondano nell'alveo politico-culturale dell'Antica Roma. Qual è il significato di SPQR? L'acronimo SPQR (Senatus PopulusQue Romanus ? Il Senato e il Popolo Romano) è stato coniato nell'Antica Roma per rappresentare quelle che, ai tempi, erano il simbolo della Repubblica romana: il Senato e il Popolo. Infatti, nella Roma repubblicana, convivevano essenzialmente due classi sociali: l'elité, costituita dai cosiddetti patrizi, e il popolo, costituito dai plebei. Per Corio “questa signoria [dei Consoli] portò col vessillo dell'aquila S.P.Q.R. le quali lettere così dicono: Senatus Populusque Romanus cioè il Senato et Popolo Romano; et queste lettere erano d'oro in campo rosso.
