#Chiese

Hi Agatha!
, one last effort and then you will be welcome to the Pensioners ' Club!
Surely you'll have so much more time to do many many shots and, this, I'm just pleased!
Thank you very much for the appreciation of the photo and the project that I will continue, on occasion, to carry on. There are many small architectural treasures of this kind in our beautiful country and, therefore, the subjects will not miss me!
A dear greeting!
Max :-)

These churches really are rich in history...
If you deepen the culture you discover that it is of Byzantine origin...
you did very well to propose it... and go in search of the past..

Ancient for sure, but also very unusual this small church: it amazes me that arc of the façade that makes it resemble more to a rural building than to a sacred one. Beautiful context that surrounds it. Congratulations on your search and for the interesting caption that you have attached.
A dear greeting, GA

Simonetta, the arch opens on a porch, placed in front of the real façade of the church, which was intended to give shelter to the pilgrims or to the simple passers-by during the night or in case of adverse weather. The church, in fact, is placed outside (hence the name "Foris Portas") of what was the walls of the castrum that, during the night, remained totally inaccessible and, therefore, it was impossible to find shelter inside.
These arcades, which in architectural jargon I think are called "narthex" (but I go to memory and I could be wrong), were quite common in isolated churches and shrines to pilgrimage destinations.
Thank you very much for your comment welcome and I am very happy that you liked the shot!
Good evening!

Yes of course, it is as you say, the fact remains that it is a very rare architecture, at least from my side-and yes, narthex is the correct name ;-)-maybe it's more typical of hilly places, but I could be wrong.
Thanks for the clarification Dear Max.
Good evening, GA

Also the Cluniac Abbey of Castelletto Cervo is famous for its pnartece where Frequentqavano the church several fraternities for example that of the Autoflagellanti (read on some book that no remember, sorry or in Wikipedia, perhaps I do not know!
However, Massimo's is a very pleasant example! Congratulations EANCEH for the news you have been able to give.

Thank you Kitty for the welcome comment and for the beautiful photo of the church of San grate that, architecturally, is quite similar, although smaller in size, at Santa Maria Foris Portas.
Thanks also for your second comment and for the report of the Abbey Cluniac of Castelletto Cervo.
Good evening!

I am very grateful to you, Simonetta, of what you write in your further comment.
I cannot tell you whether the narthex is typical of the architecture of the churches, more or less large, of the hilly places or is more widespread in some geographical areas and in other less and, most probably, it is so. I believe, however, that it is related to a certain historical period that, however, I do not know indicate.
still a great thank you!
